The 88.5-foot Roanoke Star atop Mill Mountain, built in 1949 and billed as the largest freestanding man-made illuminated star in the world, gives 'Star City' its nickname and glows over the valley from the Mill Mountain Park overlook. Originally erected as a seasonal Christmas decoration, it is now lit nightly year-round and pairs with festive holiday lights and panoramic city views during the season.
